D&D (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Bard"

In the current 2014 rules with all spells, the only unique Bard spell [As in not on the Wizard, Cleric or Druid list, since Warlock gets it] higher than 5th level is Glibness at level 8.

If you just look at spells from 2014 that only the bard gets, and literally no one else, well... if you ignore subclasses it is Vicious Mockery, Dissonant Whispers and Compulsion. All of which are 4th level or lower.
Power word heal at level 9 too.

I have as well. Paladin spells like Find Steed and Circle of Power are pretty crazy for a full caster to get access to, earlier than a Paladin can.
Paladins gain access to Find Steed at 5th level. Bards might gain access to it at 10th level. A lore bard might gain access to it at 6th level.

Bards don't gain access to Find Steed earlier just because of the spell progression charts.

Circle of Power can be acquired significantly sooner but there's far too much competition for 5th level spells known out of the 2 at 10th level or opposed to even higher level spells known at 14th or 18th levels.

Circle of Power isn't some kind of massively superior spell to other 5th level spells that gaining it at the same time as other 5th level spells is somehow "pretty crazy". It's just another 5th level spell and typically being only on the paladin list is irrelevant to the spell level. Otherwise the spell levels for the other spells on the paladin list would be borked.

Bards using these spells was never about power. It was about players not wanting to share iconic abilities, which is what the restrictions on selecting spells is meant to address.

A level 10 Bard (PHB 2014) does get access to Find Greater Steed, which a paladin can only get at level 13.

With the new (proposed) Find Steed, the discrepancy widens (since a Lore Bard can take the Find Steed at 6, and upcast to a flying mount at level 7, which (again) the Paladin can only do at 13.

I'm assuming they're sticking with the new Bard progression of "whenever you gain a new spell slot, you also gain a new spell prepared selection to put in said slot" – that was the UA6 progression.

This would mean 14 spells by 9th level, and the remaining 8 spells prepared can be of any of the four lists. This makes 12/14/16 the only levels where you don't prepare a new spell, but can still swap out an old spell.

The bard seems to be solid, after giving it some thought. I will miss Song of Rest, but I think it's still over-all an improvement with the changes to Bardic Inspiration.

Magical Secrets class restrictions do not seem necessary, in my experience, but I don't think they hurt the class either. There are plenty of spells in the cleric, druid, and wizard lists and the concept of equating those lists to divine, primal, and arcane works. I'm curious about what the revamped bard spell list looks like.

There were comments earlier that bards no longer need a spell list above 5th level spells but that precludes bard specific spells or spells shared with sorcerers or warlocks that are not on the other lists. If nothing else it's still a flavor list that takes up a small part of a page instead of using a sidebar.

I'm not a fan of the capstone being "here's two more spells you are required to know" but it's not that bad either other than being massively restricted in usage by spell slots. Some capstones see a lot of use while this one is likely to struggle with competition for the slot from other 9th level spells in a very limited number of available slots.

Valor, lore, and glamor bards haven't changed much other than some basic improvements. Jumanji dance fighting memes should be expected.

Overall seems good.
Hey at least it means you now get to know 3 9th level spells. I guess theoretically you could learn 7 different 9th level spells by choosing to learn 3 of them and retrain 4 of them, but with only one slot to use them on, it made very little sense to choose more than 1 9th-level spell. This gives you some built-in versatility for the slot.

Same issue as Circle of Power. The bard only gets 2 choices of every spell from levels 1 thru 5 which is a very crowded choice for the player. Find Greater Steed is still just another 4th level spell among many spells that isn't significantly better than other 4th level spells in the choice.

As far as the paladin is concerned, every spell on the list is gained at later levels than casters like bards, clerics, druids, sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards. The fact that Find Greater Steed is typically only on the paladin list ist still irrelevant to the spell levels compared to it and other choices.

All those casters gain access to 4th level spells at the same time. The spells in question are still just spells of those levels.

It's like complaining about the relative access to Raise Dead. That gap exists too and it's no different. ;-)
