"Old magic" is Psionic, the magic of a soul.In the video Crawford mentioned that their power comes from the words of creation that formed the universe, so I'll go with OLD MAGIC, the root that eventually split into three branches.
I'm down with equating Old magic with Psionic, but would argue that Psionic magic is the magic of our world leaking thru the Far Realms into the D&D Multiverse. After all, D&D was created by words from our world. It's the magic of our imagination."Old magic" is Psionic, the magic of a soul.
I think they "cheat" - they use words of power that access the Weave (or whatever represents the fundamental forces of magic) to create magical effects that cross-over the (purely conceptual) divide between "power sources".
