Something like that, yes. Though I don't think I could run a game for Bester. Probably more like Talia or Lyta. Probably the latter, she has a very D&D-character-style arc, including making some uncomfortable sacrifices and having mysterious powers.
Yeah, I only included Bester because no one trusts him, which for some reason is how my friends feel about my PCs!

Imagine Babylon 5 crossed with the Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings. Those four are probably the four greatest contributors to my perspective on fiction and good gaming.
I don't know if it changes anything, but for clarity this question is about D&D, not gaming in general.

That's fair. My answer wouldn't change much. Exploring, do-goodery, and high ADVENTURE, with pathos and emotional tension as each character explores their own story and how the group's stories collectively intertwine, are my primary interest as a player.

I do like pulp a lot though. So I guess swap out Sinbad for Indiana Jones. (I was speaking of my Dungeon World game, which I felt was close enough thematically to fit with "D&D General.") I genuinely can't overstate how important B5 has been for my understanding of, and appreciation for, character-driven storytelling in a strongly-thematic narrative structure.

Heh, the Grognard of that list is strong. Were any of those movies from this century?

My games tend to be more magical than most of the movies of that list. For that reason, I needed to say Harry Potter where magic is ubiquitous, and most characters competent with it. I also picked Star Wars, since at least the Jedi and other Force users are high magic.

Honor Among Thieves is recent, of course. But D&D movies are from the era of old school. Even Honor is low tier magic. The main characters are martials and low level casters. The impressive spells are from magic items or cast by the villain Sofina, a legend tier (or epic) Lich.

If there were superhero movies in the list, I would pick those too, because of the high magic.

Not quite. I am stating my opinion about what I think other people might not like.

But you're getting closer! ;)
Which is what I said: you are telling people what they should like, as well as telling a whole bunch of people the game they play is “not D&D”. I think there is a word for that.
