There is a poll but no doubt I left out YOUR favorite fantasy move, so feel free to suggest ones to add in the comments.

A couple notes:

These are listed in no particular order because I have another browser tab open to a "best fantasy movies ever" search. This is how the sauage is made, folks.

I intentionally did not include anime, because the list would be double the length or more, and my anime knowledge is much more limited than my live action fantasy knowledge. That sounds like a great poll for someone else to do.

Despite the directly preceding note, I did include both Bashki's Lord of the Rings and Wizards because I said so that's why.

ETA: This is NOT a poll about what fantasy movies are good, or even what is your favorite, just which ones reflect your ideal D&D campaign. Also, you can pick multiple options because your ideal campaign is probably a mix.

Pirates, Big Trouble, Honor Among Thieves.

All of them have fantastic elements, silly stuff, and thrilling moments. The first two also include something very important to me: Elements of Horror.

I've never really enjoyed a true "Horror" campaign because they're all kind of"All suspense no relief" until it becomes boring AF. You've gotta build up, release, build up, release, for that kind of storytelling. But -elements- of horror in other stuff is often really good. Because you can get plenty tense and then there's other things happening for the release.

Also every game needs some room for comedy. You get a group of friends hanging out there's going to be jokes that derail things or result in weird funny situations in character. Like Burton firing off a few rounds into the ceiling and missing half the fight because of it.

I picked Neverending Story (Portal fantasy), Willow (classic plots), Ladyhawke (romance and magic), Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon (not wuxia specifically, but superhuman fantasy), and Big Trouble in Little China (cross genre weirdness). Also Wizards, because science fantasy.

I love Jackson's LotR trilogy, but they aren't really how I want D&D to play, specifically.

None of these are quite how my campaigns play out, even though I love a bunch of them. So I haven't voted yet.

Suggestions to add – The Last Unicorn, Flight of Dragons, Rankin/Bass LotR/Hobbit films, Jackson Hobbit series, and most important, almost every single Miyazaki/Ghibli film!

Charlaquin

Goblin Queen (She/Her/Hers)
DaD:HAT is really the only one of these that has a level of magic that actually feels like D&D, IMO. But, setting that aside, I voted for it, Princess Bride for vibes, and Jackson’s LotR for the adventure.
