D&D (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

Warpiglet-7

Cry havoc! And let slip the pigs of war!
Good thing as DM I have infinite dragons. Actually there are a lot of ways to quickly and easily beef up monsters to make them more of a threat. Examples include adding a +2 to attack modifier, advantage to attack, max out damage or ... well any number of other options including adding attacks or powers I think are thematically appropriate. But this is ground well trod. Difficulty and level of challenge is up to the DM.

Don't be a slave to the encounter calculations in the book or the daily XP budget and the issues have gone away for me.
Whether I stay with 5.0 completely or partially, I am going to get a big bolder with this.

I guess I need to hear it. When it’s my turn to dm I add more monsters vs beef them up. Sometimes the latter (I bet) is more granular.

Its an art and not a science I think, much like 1e when we just had an intuitive feel and us players often ran like hell!

As the Red Dragon is (for the most part) relatively unchanged, maybe this is a better example. I'm not sure if I like the new Black Dragon design, myself - but I do think that this looks pretty awesome. I wouldn't want ALL black dragons to look like this guy, but an individual black dragon? I could see it:

The designer commented on their heads, as they age the acid breath causes their scales to slowly melt and fall off. So the older and more powerful the more of a white face they will have but young ones are still all black.

My dog's kinda like that. Not the acid part, but her face went white as she aged - she used to be all orange. Here's her from just now:

I like some of the new art. That halfling wild magic sorcerer with the prosthetic arm is awesome.

I think it’s mainly the dragons. I just think they look hideous and ridiculous. I much prefer the 3.xe / OG 5e designs. Rest assured I will not be using the new dragon art at my table.
Ah, yeah, I hear ya: hiw anything looks at the table is pretty firmly in our power...God knows I have enough dragon art on hand to choke a horse!

I like ne takes insofar as it increases the options in my cubbard.

While I like that it sounds like it is going to fix some issues that have been around since the edition’s start, it’s mostly a glow-up to sell another round of books. There are some things I might incorporate, but I don’t feel like I need to buy all new books to do so. As I have been saying, my intention is to get the DMG, but for now I’ll pass on the others. As always, there’s going to be new issues the books cause with the changes.

Don’t care about new art all, the rules are the big things, there’s tons of places to draw from art that better matches my view of the game anyways.

Another thing I do is rebuild some monsters using the one page monster from the Blog of Holding. Especially for the MM, they're a lot tougher. I've also been using the Tome of Beasts 1 lately and I they are definitely up the challenge level.

I think there are some nice tweaks/additions. However, for my fantasy tastes, I don't see anything to make want to buy the PHB. I find the new subclasses (with the possible exception of the Circle of the Sea Druid), the increase in healing (adding healing abilities, making some class healing bonus actions, etc), and most of the additions from Tasha's to be disappointing.

Hard to have an opinion with only seeing player-facing stuff.

Waiting to see on monsters. Really didn't like the Sphinx of Wonder. TBD

Fingers crossed on DMG. I like Chris Perkins' thought process about it. They've promised a lot. TBD.

Player-facing stuff. Very mixed bag. Some good changes. Some WTF why'd you touch that changes. Some "Oh god that'll be more headache for the GM" changes. Slightly negative impression overall.

Impression I have so far is "5e but more", more choices, more art, but that goes for problematic areas of the game I wish they'd address too (i.e. magnifying those existing problems).

YMMV. I'm an outlier.

They basically took everything I didn't like about WotC 5e (narrative focus, PCs as unique, virtually invincible heroes, heavy spell emphasis for everyone, little to no mechanical support outside of tactical combat) and doubled down on it.

And I don't consider new art a strong enough selling point to re-buy anything, even if I like it. Art just doesn't matter that much to me.

Eh. It's different but it doesn't address the problems we've had or that I think are important. We'll play it, but we're looking at different games. Gloomhaven and MCDM are both on our list.

I'm picking it up not because I'm excited, but because it's D&D.
