Even without Pemerton's hyperbole, its not like what a given character should know is particular clearly spelled out and something everyone agrees on.
Which is why you discuss it as a group. I've had groups where we all know what monsters are and we just agree to as the DM what our character knows. I just played with someone who didn't know what a mimic was. I was in a group where one of the players would literally pull out the MM and read out pertinent stats and abilities until the group told him to stop because we didn't want to know the details.

So talk about it as a group and decide on approach.

Is it cheating to have run or played a module before?
Depends on the group.
Are those involved trying to "win/beat" D&D? If the answer is yes then someone is always metagaming, or fudging rolls or optimizing to gain an edge that may or may not be there. This could be considered cheating.

If you have a group that trusts one another and is capable of suspending their disbelief and is more interested in being entertained than "winning" then no.
