D&D 3E/3.5 Brainstorming another Fey PC

Here's a short list of animals associated with being tricksters in various myths, if you want to use any of them as your animal base for a hengeyokai trickster PC:
  • Coyote (Native American trickster god)
  • Fox (believed by many cultures to be devious and sly)
  • Monkey (after the Chinese trickster god, the Monkey King)
  • Rabbit (mostly from the "Brer Rabbit" tales)
  • Raccoon (Native American lesser trickster spirit)
  • Spider (mostly after Anansi, an African trickster god)
The fox, monkey, rabbit (hare), and raccoon (well, raccoon dog) have the advantages of already being existing hengeyokai subraces. You could probably substitute in dog for coyote fairly easily, but the for spider you'd probably have to create the stats on your own. (Maybe using the crab hengeyokai as a start?)

Johnathan

Aranea is there but has an LA of +4 and 3 racial HD so a steep initial cost. I played one and it was fun but it was starting as a high level already.

I used a Dog Hengeyokai for my previous build, and that was fun. So trying another Hengeyokai type would be fine…but I don’t want to get into a rut if I can avoid it.

Anyone remember the name of the monkey-like race from OA?

I’m leaning towards taking the Geomancer PrCl, which requires 2nd level arcane & divine spellcasting. I’m a LOT more familiar with a broad array of arcane casting classes than divine.

Keeping in mind that Willy has to be nonlawful, I know of these potential options:

Cleric
Druid
Divine Bard
Ranger
Shaman
Sohei
Divine Soul

Am I missing any?

If you're referencing Shaman from Oriental Adventures, there's also Spirit Shaman, Archivist, and Shugenja.

You could also use Ur-Priest or Divine Crusader PrCs to qualify for the Divine slots.

Two of my favorite 3.5 PCs were an Archivist and a Spirit Shaman, respectively, so I'm a little biased.

The Spirit Shaman and Shugenja could definitely work. Thanks!

The Spirit Shaman is looking strong, with the divine bard and ranger in the next best positions. Yes, the ranger is the weakest caster, but some of the abilities- like woodland stride- fit nicely with the (still nebulous) character idea.

There's the prestige ranger in UA. You only get 7 levels of casting over 15 levels, but it may be the flavor you want. Calm Animals is one of the pre-reqs. Druid or animal domain.
