D&D 2E [2e] Monster Mythology Update Project

The cold of winter brings the enigmatic and imprisoned god of eternal darkness and decay, known simply as the Dark God. Said to have been imprisoned long ago in order to preserve all of creation, mythology also presents it as a being that will preside over the destruction of all things when he is eventually released.

The third of the good archomentals is Ben-hadar, an arrogant and provincial ruler who many believe pushes the boundaries of what is considered good. While he does care for the well-being of his followers, he has little interest in what happens beyond the borders of the Plane of Water.

A recent addition to the drow pantheon, Zinzerena the Hunted is an outsider even among that chaotic and fractured group of powers. Once a figure in heroic legends, she managed to ascend through trickery, and has been avoiding other members of the pantheon and causing chaos among drow cities ever since. I emphasized her more neutral aspects, which I think would be coming to the fore with her recent loss of power to Lolth.

The terrible and powerful patron of the illithids is Ilsensine, the Great Brain. A deity of pure mental energy, it exhorts its followers to take their rightful place of domination over all other races of the multiverse. There’s been a lot written about illithids over the years, so this one took a lot of research and I’m pretty sure I still missed a lot of potentially relevant material, but it was still a lot of fun to write!

I was just looking up your Tiamat entry for a project I am working on and noticed you had a new post. I just wanted to say again I appreciate all of your hard work. Once I get settled in my house I will try to free up some funds to support your patreon.

Not enough 2E in my opinion. So rare to see such good 2E work. I have 2 requests (do you do requests?). I know it's probably been done, but never as well done as these.

1. The Lords of The Nine...and maybe a few other archdevils as the lesser gods they originally were in 1E...but done Faiths & Avatars style.

2. Darkness (Erebus?) from the movie Legend as a demigod?...and presumably his father...Chaos? The Void? I'm a bit lost about what they were hinting at in the movie.

Anyway. Great stuff. :)

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

I don't think the individual Lords of the Nine would have their own cults; instead there would be cults to devils in general, and they wouldn't have specialty priests.

As to movie characters, I don't think I would turn any of them into deities, although I might take inspiration for other powers.

Of course do whatever you want. This is a very labor intensive project and you have to do whatever keeps you going. However, it is very much a more modern D&D thing for the Lords of the Nine to have their own cults, even up into 5e. I can't remember if it was a 1e/2e or not though.

As I recall, Dragon #223 explicitly says that the Lords of the Nine have their own cults, but also says that they aren't able to grant them spells. We do see a cleric of Asmodeus (a half-elf named Loviath) in A Paladin in Hell (affiliate link), but there's only limited information given about her.
