Guys, this is B4, character levels 1-3, with the extended campaign being maybe 7th or upwards of 9th level. Zargon is reasonably tough as is for an epic level fight in its home lair (especially if its had a couple of sacrifices priors to the character's entry...). It's going to kill enough characters without being further tweaked upwards.

Some, like me, will never run the adventure; however, we can still be interested in using Zargon.
sure, but Zargon still has to fit into the adventure first and foremost. This is not a collection of cool statblocks sprinkled awkwardly over an adventure where the players can encounter any CR at any time, but at least the monster is interesting

He explicitly doesn't fit into the Adventure, B4 had his stat blocks but required the DM to build out about 7 Levels of Dungeon to get to him. It looks like this book provides something along those lines.

Zargon has never been part a of the adventure. A cool stat block is all he ever was.
yeah, he might be the exception to the rule ;)

I assume they made him CR 17 (and not 13 or 22, etc) for a reason though, ie returning to him after running through the other adventures to take care of him once and for all

Honestly, they said monsters would hit harder in Multiverse too, but that wasn't true. I am doubtful they will finally make CR scale along with the PC's.

I don’t think there is any particular reason for CR17. I expect they based his stat block on earlier edition versions then ran it through their dodgy algorithm to get 17.

Something: the chapter is 31 pages long, and the full last 6 pages are about what to do after concluding the OG low Level parts.

For context, the original Ten Level Ziggurat and lost city was mapped as follows:

- Level 1-5, which are keyed:

- Level 6-10, which are vaguely outlined:

- The Lost City itself, below the Ziggurat, which is vaguely outlined for development

The module seems to envision leaving the Ziggurat for the Loat Cott prior to coming back better equipped to fight Zargon. It does look like maybe this anthology will retain this format, providing maps and vague outlines for what to do as you descend past the Adventure as written.

I'm interested to see the text: the OG module had enough seed materials to build a lengthy megadungon, and come back to fight the Final Boss even if the CR is a bit high.
