Something I've never really understood: what's the motive for playing new games inspired by the style of the old ones? Why not just play the old ones?
Because old designs are in many ways kind of bad. B/X has its charms but it still needs a lot of house ruling to actually be playable today.IMO, where both Shadowdark and Dragonbane are solid modern designs built to give you that experience.

I think J Mal of Grognardia was doing so for a while? There's some post son it over there.

Personally I'm indeifferent to Mork Borg. Pros: Grear aesthetic, strong supportive community, for getting started creating things with an OSR style system. Cons: No real exploration mechanics, assumptions of one shots, grimdark. Not that I have any issue with any of those, but they don't scratch my gaming itch.

Also to the general call of the thread. None of the Above. I just use OD&D's LBBs with some house rules.
I just wanted to say I'm huge fan of your blog and adventures! Essential reading for running OSR games

I voted Mark of the Odd games, because they get at the core or OSR as a playstyle. My favorite of those is Mausritter; even if you are ambivalent about the theme (you play as a little mouse), the game design is actually really perfect.

I'm also a big fan of Whitehack. And of course, as every OSR GM will eventually do, I made my own house system based off Whitehack.

In the case of OSE or OSRIC, the old rules are presented much better, to the extent that people are actually able to agree on what the rules actually are. (See any thread where people talk about what rules from 1E they actually used.)

For the others, it's because the state of the art of rules design has greatly advanced in 50 years, and it's often seen as preferable to accomplish the same aims in a much more focused way. (Looking up to-hit matrices and saving throw charts doesn't do much other than slow down the game and lots of people, like me, would rather not do that and just focus on the good stuff.)
