Ars Magica To Get A New Edition

5th Edition Definitive will revise the game and add new content.

Ars Magica, currently on its 5th Edition, will be getting a 5th Edition Definitive edition this year. 5th Edition was released 20 years ago, and this new version will hit crowdfunding in fall 2024 as a full-colour hardcover book.

The original Ars Magica was released in 1987, and the game has been owned by Lion Rampant, White Wolf, Wizards of the Coast, and its current owner Atlas Games. Set in a mythical version of Europe, it centers around mages and features 'troupe' play where players have more than one character. It also boasts a 'verb-noun' magic system, enabling players to improvise spells on the go.

This edition has been in the works for a few years, revising and updating the text, and adding new material, new art, and new layout.

Additionally, the game will come with an open license; Atlas Games has not chosen which yet, but says it is leaning towards Creative Commons (CC BY-SA).

I’ve come to realize RPGs are a weird space in that they’re selling people the hope and daydream of playing just as much, if not more than, selling people the actual game.
Definitely, RPGs take way more effort and time to put on a table than a boardgame or a videogame. You need hours/days to read, prepare an adventure, create characters, schedule a session, sometimes your players will want a campaign, etc. If you can run 10 different RPGs in a year is already more than most people, if you buy more than that (which is a given for most people on niche communities like this forum), you won't ever catch up on all your games.

So yeah, I'm on the same boat. I'll probably buy the new Ars Magica, read it, dream about it, but I don't know if I'll ever get it to the table.

TTRPGs, just like crafting, is actually three hobbies. Playing the games, collecting the books and imagining the games we'll play, and organizing our book collections. :D
I count four there. Collecting and imagining are separate. I can collect without imagining and imagine without collecting.

Yeah, I fight that in my purchases, trying to restrict myself to books I believe I will use. I'm not always successful -- I'm maybe 50-75% successful -- but getting something I know I won't use is hard.
I’m also happy to buy books I know I will enjoy reading, even if I’m unlikely to use them. A lot of Ars Magica's supplements fall into that category for me.

Yeah, that makes sense for a lot of people. I live in a small Southern California ($$$) home and have moved several times in the last few years, so having a big physical library is impractical for me.

That was once a problem for me, as well. Retiring and settling into a home with space has "solved" it for me!

And yes, almost all purchases I make are as a collector and reader, not active player.

Nothing wrong with that, right? ;)

It looks pretty. I wonder how much such a deluxe book will be priced at. And will it supersede the standard version now available or is it more of a pretty book for the bookshelf, rather than everyone having a copy at the table?

I'll check it out but think I might prefer to wait for 6th Edition to drop.
