Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

I really like PF2ER, and I want to support Paizo, but I have come to the conclusion that it is just too heavy of a system for me. I don't want to scour rulebooks or the Archives for rules, and I don't want to do it half-assed either. I need something much lighter.

I feel bad killing the game for the players I roped into it, but I did tell them it was explicitly a test to see if it was worth the effort and mental overhead, and I don't think it is.

Been there. I get my D&D style-ish high fantasy fix with Savage Pathfinder these days.

I’ve tried to run PF2 three times now. We’ve gotten through 1-5 or 6 all three times and it’s then I call it off. Just too tight for me.

I still support Paizo when I can. I’ve purchased some APs recently to run in different systems, for instance.

I really wish I liked PF2. I’m the target audience, I ran the playtest adventures, I bought the books on release day while on an Alaskan cruise. I just can’t get it to work for me.

Give yourself to rules-lite. It is the only way you can save your gaming. Your words betray you. Your feelings for lighter rules are strong.

I have a long history with PF2e. I think I had to try it across 3 groups before getting it to mostly work.
And my eventual conclusion is that it's ... okay.

What did take me from my positive feeling about it to the present...
  • The revision pulled a lot of excitement from it.
  • Still hate diagonal measurement (cone templates, blast radiuses, etc.)
  • The very clear Ivory Tower design still in the game (there are clearly better classes and combinations)
  • The enormous number of conditions and effects to track. And needing to keep rolling saves all the time.
  • The boring feat design - like take this feat at 7th level, which works only under very special conditions, etc.
  • I don't like APs as a design choice.
  • Too many classes that don't have a good niche (should've been a subclass problem).

Savage Worlds might be a direction to go. There's even a Pathfinder variant for it.
I am a huge fan of SW, just generally not for D&D style fantasy (or Supers, but that's a different issue). I run it a lot at cons and have run it for hoem games, too.

I am leaning toward putting my PF2ER energy toward Dragonbane: I really like how it reads but have not had a chance to run or play it yet.

Understandable - its a specific kind of game that appeals to a specific playstyle, not a system that everyone will love.

I’ve got the Dragonbane box set but have not had the chance to get into it. From what I’ve read review wise it’s getting a lot of love.
