[DIY] Abstract Battle Board

I made this to help me visualize combat on a small surface. I use 10mm dice of various colors. The PCs are on the top half (blue-wizard, orange-warrior, yellow-elf archer, green-thief and purple-cleric - if you are getting a Gauntlet vibe you are as old as me!)

The green-thief is attempting to sneak. Two melee orcs (red 1& 2) are in melee, while two archer orcs (black 4&5) are shooting at the elven archer. The last orc (black 3 is waiting his turn to advance and attack blue-wizard.

I also use 10mm polyhedral sets. Very compact.

Legend
I never liked theatre of the mind (TotM) for game play and something like this would make it better for me to picture 'about' ranges for people and monsters. I'm not sure on your board above if one of the dice can move across the hand-to-hand area to the enemies area to bring other monsters into range of his hand-to-hand? For example, the blue dice wants to eventually get to the black 4 and 5 archers. Can he move closer to engage, or are they always going to move to remain in the range area? Seems helpful, but not quite like a grid and minis.

Yes, one side can cross the middle line if no one is there to stop them.
